Education and Learning
The education system can appear confusing, in part because it frequently changes. In this section we have a selection of resources which can help you understand and navigate the landscape to best help your mentee.
- How the education system works
- The GCSE grading system
- Learning styles
- Exam preparation and revision tips
HOW THE EDUCATION SYSTEM WORKS
Your mentee will probably be in the middle of their GSCEs years. They will be making decisions about what to do next.
A lot has changed recently so, by way of an overview, here is the link to a SATRO PowerPoint that may help you understand how it looks today.
This language around education can be complicated sometimes so here? is a glossary of definitions- everything from academy to transition.
THE GCSE GRADING SYSTEM
The system for grading GCSEs changed in 2017 from A*- U system to 9 - 1. There is an equivalence which is explained by this table.
LEARNING STYLES: ALL LEARNERS ARE DIFFERENT
All of us learn and retain knowledge in different ways. Understanding your learning 'type' can be invaluable in making the most of school and in doing as well as you can at exams. Your mentee may already know their learning type: Auditory, Visual or Kinesthetic. Here is an overview that may help.
Here is a link to a downloadable quiz that may help as well.
EXAM PREPARATION AND REVISION TIPS
Exams are a fact of school life and there is no escape. Almost every student will need a pass at grade 4 in Maths and English to progress to further education and/or many jobs. Some students find them straightforward, others really struggle with revision or exam nerves.
Understanding what sort of learner they are can help them learn and revise efficiently (see above).
